NATURE
The Montcortés Pool is covered by the Pla d’Espais d’Interès Natural (PEIN – Plan for Spaces of Natural Interest). This is the only pool in the comarca (local district) of El Pallars Sobirà (Pyrenees - Spain) that is of karstic rather than glacial origin. Its waters come from an internal source and the depth of the pool ranges from about 20 to 40 metres. This area of lakes is one of the most important reserves for water birds in the whole of the Pyrenees and it receives visits from a wide variety of migrating species, including the mallard, osprey and snipe.
The area also boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna, some of which are relatively rare in other parts of the Pyrenees. From the pool, it is possible to follow several trekking routes while it is also possible to swim and fish in the pool itself.
How to get there: From Gerri de la Sal, head towards Sort and follow the local district road that branches off to the left towards La Pobleta de Bellveí. The pool is 12 km away.
